Leather Bangles Introduced As New Fundraising Item From
Sales Raise Funds For Local And National Domestic Violence Agencies; Additional Funds To Be Raised Via Charity Shopping Day On October 19
NEW YORK, NY - (September 22, 2000) - Liz Claiborne Inc. is introducing two new, limited-edition items to raise funds for domestic violence prevention organizations as part of the company's nine-year, national domestic violence awareness and education campaign called Women's Work®.
This year's fundraising items are a set of three narrow, flexible leather bangle bracelets finished with a sterling silver bar ($10) and a long-sleeved, cotton T-shirt with the campaign's new logo ($12). To stimulate a more vocal public discussion of the issue, both items feature the message "love is not abuse." Consumers may order the items through the toll-free Women's Work product order line at 1-800-449-STOP (7867) beginning in October. Sales from the 800 number will be donated to the Family Violence Prevention Fund, a national public policy and education organization working to end all forms of domestic violence and Liz Claiborne's national philanthropic partner.
The bracelets and T-shirts will also be sold in all Liz Claiborne and Elisabeth stores nationwide during October, in support of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Profits from store sales will be donated to local domestic violence charity partners. The items will be available during Liz Claiborne's seventh annual Charity Shopping Day on October 19th, when all Liz Claiborne and Elisabeth stores nationwide will donate 10 percent of the total day's sales to the same local charity partners.
Send a Message With a Fashion Statement
One of Fall 2000's key fashion accessories promises to be the bangle bracelet, particularly when worn in multiples. Liz Claiborne is responding to this trend with a fundraising item that is not only stylish, but makes a social statement and raises money for a meaningful cause.
Each set of Liz Claiborne's three leather bracelets is finished with a squared-off sterling silver bar inscribed with the program message "love is not abuse." A small sterling heart dangles from one of the three bars. The bracelets, which can be worn together or shared with friends, are available in red, camel or black in sizes Small/Medium and Medium/Large.
The new Women's Work commemorative T-shirt features this year's vivid red, purple and chartreuse campaign icon: images of two people whose extended hands are joined by a heart, illustrating a positive, supportive romantic relationship or friendship. The front of the T-shirt carries the "love is not abuse" message while the back of the shirt displays the following call-to-action: "Relationship Abuse. Awareness + Education = Prevention. Be Part of the Equation." The 100% cotton, long-sleeved, white T-shirt is available in four sizes: Extra Small, Medium, Extra Large and Women's Size 3.
Working to Create a Society Intolerant of Abuse
Since 1991, Liz Claiborne Inc. has been addressing the issue of domestic violence through its Women's Work program. The program's awareness and education campaign has included billboards, television and radio announcements, posters, brochures, campus workshops and partnerships with local retailers and community groups. Each year the program strives to reach different audiences with focused anti-abuse messages. Last year's campaign included a television public service announcement featuring actor Susan Sarandon and a "Woman's Handbook" to help friends, family and coworkers reach out to women they suspect may be experiencing relationship abuse; previous campaigns have focused on parents, men, college students and corporate America.
This year, Liz Claiborne is launching a teen dating violence awareness and education program which includes a free educational handbook, the third in the company's series of educational guides on the topic of relationship abuse, and featured Web content on the popular teen site Alloy.com. Entitled "What You Need to Know About Dating Violence: A Teen's Handbook," it tells the story of a high school couple in a violent dating relationship. Interwoven are special sections that debunk common myths about dating violence, offer suggestions for friends on how to help, provide quotes from real teens and list resources for further assistance. The Web content, an expanded, interactive version of the handbook, will be launched on Alloy.com in September. Beginning in October, print copies of the handbook can be ordered through the Women's Work product order line at 1-800-449-STOP (7867) or the Liz Claiborne Web site, where the handbook will also be available to download and print.
