Handbag Debuts As 1999 Fundraising Item From
Liz Claiborne Continues To Raise Funds To Help End Relationship Abuse
NEW YORK, NY - (May 25, 1999) - Continuing its award-winning, national campaign to encourage people to speak out against relationship abuse, Liz Claiborne Inc. is offering two new, limited-edition items to raise funds for domestic violence prevention organizations: a modern, satchel-style handbag and a long-sleeved cotton T-shirt with the 1999 Women's Work logo.
Both products will be available through the toll-free Women's Work product order line at 1-800-449-STOP (7867) beginning in October. Profits from sales through the 800 number will be donated to the Family Violence Prevention Fund, a national public policy and education organization working to end domestic violence and Liz Claiborne's national philanthropic partner.
Both items will also be sold in all Liz Claiborne and Elisabeth stores nationwide during October, in support of National Domestic Violence Awareness month. Profits from the store sales will be donated to local domestic violence charity partners.
Make A Fashion Statement, Send A Message
The handbag ($25) is a satchel style and perfect for day or evening. It is available in two fabrics, a black satin nylon and a charcoal washed-linen textured blend. The bag is lined in a black, tone-on-tone signature fabric bearing the Women's Work 1999 message, "love is not abuse," and features an internal zipped compartment and a security snap-over tab. A solid metal "drop" also carrying the "love is not abuse" message hangs from the handle of each bag and can be removed and used as a key chain.
In addition to the handbag, Women's Work is issuing a new, 1999 commemorative T-shirt ($12). The front of the T-shirt features the "love is not abuse" message and this year's brightly colored campaign icon: four symbols that together graphically represent the elements of a healthy, balanced relationship-a flower for hope, a heart for love, a face representing people both in and around the relationship, and a house, where these elements should flourish. The back of the shirt carries the following call to action: "Relationship violence. Learn the Facts. Talk about it. Be part of the solution." The 100% cotton, long-sleeved, white T-shirt is available in three sizes: Small, X-Large and Women's Size 3.
Working To Create A Society Intolerant Of Abuse
Since 1991, Liz Claiborne Inc. has been addressing the issue of domestic violence through its Women's Work program. The program's awareness and education campaign has included billboards, TV and radio announcements, posters, brochures, campus workshops and partnerships with local retailers and community groups. Each year the program strives to reach different audiences with targeted anti-abuse messages. Last year's campaign included a public service announcement with the voice of actress Ashley Judd and a "Parent's Handbook" to help parents talk to their children about developing healthy, abuse-free relationships-both peer and dating; previous campaigns have targeted men, college students and corporate America.
In addition to the 1999 fundraising objects, Liz Claiborne is also debuting the second in its handbook series. This year's free handbook is called "A Woman's Handbook: A Practical Guide to Discussing Relationship Abuse" and is a guide for
women on how to talk to other women about relationship abuse. The booklet will be available through the Women's Work product order line at 1-800-449-STOP (7867) beginning in October.
